This is from the silent film, 'The Man Who Laughs', the story is by Victor Hugo...
Gwynplaine was deformed by cruel gypsies as an orphaned child.
Dea is a blind girl.
They fall in love.
Now they are adults.
He feels unworthy of her love because of his cruel deformity.

A compelling movie.

I just got the book! I am going to read it...I have heard that it is different than the movie...we will see...

I think his face was covered, a la the Phantom of the Opera, because he hated his deformity...His mouth was carved into a death-like grin...
He was very tender and affectionate toward Dea...

That's story is heartbreaking... who is the author? I want to read it, those are the love stories I like ;)
